the glucose screening test

Today was a pretty neat day for me. It was the day of my glucose screening test. I know, you are probably looking dumbfoundedly at the computer monitor and wondering if you just read that last sentence correctly. How does a glucose screening test equate to a neat day?!

For me, it is one of those milestones in pregnancy that signify you are getting pretty far along in the process. Those things include:

  • 20 week ultrasound
  • Glucose screening test
  • 30-weeks pregnant

I don’t know why, but whenever my friends reached these points in their pregnancy, I always thought to myself, “wow, they are really far along in this thing!”

So, today I had my glucose screening test. I thought to myself, “wow, you are pretty far a long in this thing.” And it made me smile.

For those unfamiliar, this is how the test works:

  • Eat breakfast/lunch as normal
  • Wait 2 hours and then consume this ultra-sweet juice that is packed with glucose
  • Wait 1 hour before having your blood drawn

The blood draw tests your blood sugar level to see how well your body did breaking down the glucose in the juice. Essentially, they are looking to see if the pregnancy has caused you to develop gestastional diabeties. I was a little nervous going in because I’ve heard so many terrible accounts of how badly the juice tastes. Honstley, I don’t know what all the fuss is about. Perhaps others just weren’t picking the right flavor – I went with fruit punch. I found it to be quite tolerable. Almost enjoyable. I also didn’t have any of the jittery or “sugar-rush-crash” side effects I’ve heard others describe to me. Hopefully this is a good sign. I should know more in a couple of days.

I also enjoyed my gluclose drink and had the fruit punch, I almost asked for a couple more to take home with me! I hope your results turn out good, I would love to see pictures of the nursery when you are done!
